In Montpellier, the coast is an invitation to take a break, relax in the sun and enjoy the pleasure of the sea. Each year, this coast line is the favourite destination of a great number of tourists on business trips or on holiday, thanks to the quality of its beaches with smooth slopes to the sea, exceptional sunshine, the diversity and appeal of its ports and seaside resorts as well as its lakes, whose preservation has contributed to protecting the coast.
Another must in Montpellier is the Place de la Comédie, a square bordered with magnificent listed buildings that are lit up at night, including the Opéra Comédie, a replica of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. It also enthrones the famous “Three Graces” fountain – Aglaia and Thalia and Euphrosyne, daughters of Zeus and one of Okeanos – dated 1776, as well as a pink marble egg drawn out on the ground to remember the hectic traffic which used to pass through (hence the square’s long forgotten name “The Egg”).
Easily accessible by plane, TGV (very high speed train) or by car from Paris, Lyons, Marseilles or Toulouse, Montpellier is in the centre of one of the oldest and largest vineyards in the world. Its labels are worth the detour.
